Fire Awareness

Last night I went to a free dinner / fire awareness presentation with Sammy and her parents. It was at Burton’s, a restaurant on 3rd St at Downtown Corvallis.

The dinner was okay, not all that great but hey, it’s free. The presentation was quite interesting though, we basically learned how most smoke/fire detectors that we use at home, or those provided by landlords, only work 50% of the time in the event of real fire, but works 100% in the event of cooking and such.

U.S. has the most death caused by fire in all industrialized nations, and just like everything else, we blame Hollywood for it. Movies like Spiderman 2 gave people a false sense of danger in fire. In a real fire, you wouldn’t even see your hands even if it’s right in front of you. And so many fire victims in the U.S. actually got out of the house in the first place, but went back in to grab their ‘important’ items.

Ionized smoke detectors do not work all the time due to the properties of ‘heavy’ smoke particles that are created by burning plastic/sofa/tv, but it does work great when you burn baccon/pork/beef/chicken/human. Lesson learned: Get optical smoke /fire detectors and have fire extinguishers in every room.
