This past Friday I went to Saburo with a Eric and Tony. Eric just got back from Taiwan a couple of weeks ago so we met up just for the sake of good old times. Saburo is located in Portland, on the side of town of Milwauke. The shop is about the size of my livingroom + kitchen + dining room, a relatively small area for any restaurant, not to mention it is the best sushi shop in Oregon.
A 45 minutes up to 1.5 hour wait is normal and to be expected. The sign-less shop relies on the long line of people waiting outside to reveal it’s secret location, it also relies on word of mouth to gather more customers. Once you get seated, you only have ONE chance of ordering.
The menu was big, and everything looks good, so all three of us just started bubbling the ordering sheet without really think how much we can eat. By the time we see the food, we knew it would be a long night. Each sushi is huge, the size of each fish fillet is three times the size of rice they give to you. Every single one we ordered was delicious, and big. Most people don’t get full from eating sushi, but at Saburo it’s almost a duty to eat til you are full.
We ate alomst about $100 worth of sushi, and needless to say, we’ll be back again, but not anytime soon.
Ps. $100 is usually about 4 – 5 people worth of sushi, it’s really not that expensive.
Actually I got back less than a week ago.
Ahh you finally got to experience the awesomeness that is Saburo. Nice!
i have actually been there several times, it is truely the best sushi place in oregon.
