Review of “Passion of the Christ”

Our church, Calvery Chapel, has rented the theatre for brothers and sister to watch the movie on Monday, two days before the opening day, so here is the review:

So after reading the gospels several times, we know why Jesus was crucified, but this movie showed us how it has occured. This movie is not only graphical intensive filled with gory bloody fleshy scenes, it is also a heartaching experience because we know it’s suppose to be us, getting spit on the face, getting beat up, nail-whipped, and crucified, yet He has suffered all that punishment for our sins, not His.

Warning: Spoiler

(That’s if you have not read New Testament books of John, Luke, Mark and Matthew)

The movie starts out with Jesus crying outside of Jerusalem, praying to His father, seeking for guidence and strength, and how the Satan is trying to corrupt Him, 12 hours before his crucifixion. Judas sold Jesus to the pharoses, and led the soldiers to arrest Him. Even though Peter has cut off one of the soldiers’ ear, Jesus commanded Peter to drop his sword, and healed the wounded soldier. He then was taken before the pharoses, and constantly getting brutal treatment from others. Later badly tortured, and then crucified.

Several parts of the movie can be confusing, or historically incorrect. First is the appearance of Satan, whom appeared at the garden, trying to corrupt Jesus just before Judas has led soldiers to arrest Him. As I recall correctly, I dont’ remember Satan next to Jesus, and I didn’t know it was Satan until the serpent comes out, but who knows, maybe he was there? Second is when Judas hung himself outside of Jerusalem in the middle of nowhere. But for people who digs into the Bible will know that at that time, Jerusalem is still filled with trees.

The acting in this movie is excellent, using Arabic, Latin, and Hebrew is definitely more effective than using English. Graphic is very realistic, getting nail-lashed is NOT a take-your-kid-to-see-this-movie scene, and the same type of goriness carried through out the entire film, the brutal images has delivered the clear image of what would’ve been happening to us in hell if Jesus hasn’t done it for us.

I believe that this movie could’ve worked on why Jesus was crucified for us, perhaps it would give the non-believers a better understanding of it. But perhaps the point of the movie was only to show us what has happened, and leaves it to us to re-read the gospels and understand the reasoning, and allow us to have a better relationship with God.

If you are thinking about taking your non-believer friends to see this movie, I would highly suggest you tell them the story, in great details, so there will be no confusions. After all, this movie is not meant for enjoyment, but as a simple reminder of what Jesus did for us, and what we should be doing in this world that is filled with temptations.
